What this training will cover
The workshop is open to everyone interested in learning and thinking about anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice in our diverse Island community. It’s not just for therapists, but anyone who works with and alongside people from different races and cultures, and wants to do better as a colleague and ally.

Professor Charura will cover the theory and practice of anti-discriminatory practice, through experiential learning and group exercises. Together, we’ll consider what anti-discriminatory practice looks like in our workplaces and our communities in Jersey:

  • Exploring the impact of discrimination and oppression
  • What does ‘anti-oppressive and anti-discriminatory practice’ look like in the context of our own work and our communities in Jersey
  • Having difficult conversations which embody an anti-oppressive and anti-discriminatory stance
  • How might we change our thinking and practice to address these barriers in our work?
  • Understanding micro-inequities and aggressions/ behaviours
  • The barriers our clients/customers experience and how it impacts them.
  • Definitions of anti-oppressive and anti-discriminatory practice, language and broaching
